Insurance scam gone wrong

A man who intended to claim on his car insurance after setting his vehicle alight has been ordered to reimburse the fire department for its time and facilities, it has been revealed.

Thomas James Fergusson had told his car insurance firm that his Ford Focus, worth $4,600 had been stolen and set alight yet had pleaded guilty after investigators became suspicious of his claim.

He was then ordered to pay $960 to Chilliwack Fire Department for their time and resources.

According to his insurance firm, the man would have received compensation from the damages had they failed to discover the claim had been fraudulent.
